Kerala's waterfalls transform completely during monsoon. The thin trickles you'd dismiss in April become roaring curtains of white by July. The problem is, everyone knows Athirappilly. What most travellers miss are the dozens of unnamed, unmarked cascades scattered across Wayanad, Idukki, and Pathanamthitta.
1. Kanthanpara Falls, Wayanad
Tucked inside a tea estate near Lakkidi, Kanthanpara is a 30-foot cascade that most Google Maps searches won't surface. The walk from the roadside is 15 minutes through cardamom plantations. You'll likely have it to yourself on a weekday.
Niha's Tip
Visit before 8 AM or after 4 PM to avoid the rare tourist bus that occasionally finds this place. The tea estate path is slippery - wear shoes with grip, not sandals.
2. Palaruvi Falls, Kollam
Situated inside the Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary, Palaruvi is a 300-foot freefall that most Kerala itineraries ignore because Kollam isn't on the typical tourist trail. The forest walk to reach it passes through genuine wilderness - you may hear Malabar giant squirrels before you see them.
3. Meenmutty Falls, Wayanad
Three-tiered and genuinely difficult to reach, Meenmutty rewards effort. The 2 km trek involves rope climbs and stream crossings. During peak monsoon (July-August), the lowest tier creates a natural pool that adventurous swimmers use as a plunge pool.
Niha's Tip
The forest department closes access during heavy red alerts. Check the Wayanad District Collector's website or call the forest checkpost at Muttil before making the trip.
4. Thusharagiri Falls, Kozhikode
Three distinct falls - Thenpara, Elapara, and Thoovanam - make up Thusharagiri. The trek connecting all three is about 6 km and involves bamboo groves and river crossings. Thoovanam, the highest, is a mist-maker in monsoon - standing close means you're immediately soaked.
5. Aruvikkuzhi Waterfall, Kumarakom
Just 5 km from Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, this rubber plantation waterfall is unlike anything else on this list. The cascade runs through cultivated land, and the contrast between the manicured plantation and wild water is visually striking.
6. Cheeyappara Falls, Ernakulam-Munnar Highway
Visible from the NH544 between Ernakulam and Munnar, Cheeyappara is the waterfall you've driven past without stopping. It has seven steps and plunges 300 feet. The staircase viewpoint above gives you a perspective most tourists who stop at the roadside never see.
7. Soochipara Falls, Wayanad
Also called Sentinel Rock Waterfalls, Soochipara is technically not unknown - but its upper viewing point, a 45-minute trek beyond the standard tourist spot, is where you want to be. The crowds thin out almost immediately once you start climbing.
“The best waterfall in Kerala is always the next one you haven't found yet.”
